The Perimenopause Supplement Stack: What I Wish Someone Had Handed Me at 42

The Perimenopause Supplement Stack: What I Wish Someone Had Handed Me at 42

Let me save you two years.

When perimenopause started, I did what most of us do. I asked my doctor, got a shrug. I asked the internet, got a firehose. I bought powders that tasted like sadness, capsules I forgot to take, and one “hormone-balancing” tea that gave me a headache and forty dollars of regret.

Two years and about a thousand studies later, I have a stack. Not a prescription. A starting point. This is what I actually take, why I take it, and the exact products I use.

I am not a doctor. I am a woman who read the research, ran the experiment on her own body, and figured out what moves the needle. Talk to yours before you add anything. Start with one, not five.

Here it is.

1. Omega 3 (EPA/DHA), the quiet workhorse

If you only add one thing, add this.

Perimenopause is an inflammatory event. Estrogen has been keeping quiet fires down all over your body for decades, and as it drops, the fires get louder. Joint aches you did not have at 38. Brain fog that feels like your thoughts are wading through pudding. Mood swings that are not really about the thing in front of you.

Omega 3 fatty acids, specifically EPA and DHA, are the most well-studied intervention for baseline inflammation, cognitive function, and mood in women over 40. This is not a supplement industry claim. It is decades of research.

I take Nordic Naturals because it is the brand my functional medicine friends actually trust, it is third-party tested, and it does not come back on me (no fish burps, which if you know, you know).

2. Creatine, and no, it is not just for men

I know. You have been told creatine is for teenage boys in tank tops.

Here is what the research actually shows. Creatine monohydrate, 5 grams a day, preserves lean muscle mass (the exact tissue your body starts shedding in perimenopause), supports strength gains from training, and, most surprising, has real cognitive benefits, especially for women, especially during hormonal transitions.

Women in perimenopause are chronically under-dosed on creatine. Most of us have never taken it. The studies coming out in the last three years are wild.

Five grams. Once a day. In water, coffee, smoothie, whatever. No loading phase needed for women. It is flavorless. It is one of the most researched supplements in existence. It is cheap.

3. Ashwagandha, for the cortisol chaos

If you have felt “wired and tired” at the same time, you know cortisol.

Perimenopause and cortisol do not get along. As estrogen and progesterone drop, cortisol tends to stay high longer, spike more easily, and generally run the show. That is the 3 a.m. wake-up. The racing thoughts before a meeting that should not feel like a meeting. The bone-deep tired that a nap does not touch.

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen. It does not sedate you. It helps your nervous system stop overreacting. The research on ashwagandha for cortisol modulation and sleep quality in perimenopausal women is genuinely strong.

I use Pure Encapsulations because it is hypoallergenic, third-party tested, and does not have the mystery filler problem that plagues cheaper adaptogen brands.

4. Collagen, because estrogen was doing more than you knew

Estrogen quietly supports skin elasticity, joint cushioning, hair thickness, and bone density. When it drops, so do all of those.

Collagen is not a magic bullet. Anyone who tells you it is, is selling you something. But the research on hydrolyzed collagen peptides for skin hydration, joint comfort, and hair/nail quality in women 40+ is legit. It is scaffolding you can eat.

Vital Proteins is the one I actually stick with because it dissolves clean in coffee, has no weird aftertaste, and is grass-fed.

5. The herbal layer, for the parts nobody talks about

Here is the piece the big supplement brands miss.

Perimenopause is not just what happens inside your bloodwork. It is skin that suddenly acts like a stranger. Hair that has opinions it did not used to have. Intimate dryness nobody warned you about because your mother’s generation did not use the word “vagina” in mixed company.

You need clean, women-formulated products for the everywhere-else stuff. Not drugstore chemicals. Not overpriced “clean beauty” that is mostly water and marketing.

I have been using Celsius Herbs for the herbal wellness layer. Clean formulations, women-founded, and their line covers the topical/intimate/wellness territory that pills do not touch.

How to start (please read this part)

1. Do not add all five at once. Your body will not tell you which one is working. Start with one. Give it 30 days. Then layer.

Order I would recommend for most women: Omega 3 first (foundational, hardest to over-do), then creatine (fast wins on energy and strength), then ashwagandha (sleep and cortisol), then collagen (long game), then the topical/herbal layer.

3. Talk to your doctor. Especially if you are on medication, especially blood thinners (Omega 3), thyroid meds (ashwagandha can interact), or anything hormonal.
4. Give it time. Supplements are not a light switch. They are a dial. You will feel the shift at 30, 60, 90 days, not day 3.

What is not on this list, on purpose

There is no magic “hormone balancing” pill. There is no miracle mushroom. There is no adaptogenic blend that fixes perimenopause.

If someone is selling you one, you are the product, not the customer.

The stack above is boring. It is well-studied. It is what actually works. Boring and effective is the whole ARDVI brand in one sentence.

The bigger picture

Supplements are the last 10 percent. The first 90 percent is sleep, strength training, protein, sunlight, and boundaries.

But that last 10 percent, when you get it right, is the difference between white-knuckling your 40s and actually feeling like yourself in a body that is finally, quietly, becoming powerful.

You are not falling apart. You are recalibrating.

Start with one. Build the stack. Come back in a year and tell me what changed.

Defined by fire. 🔥
